What Are Dental Fillings?
When your tooth is damaged by decay, a filling is used to to restore your tooth to its normal look and function. First, your dentist will remove the decayed portion of your tooth and clean the area to make sure there isn’t any debris. Next, a dental filling is applied in order to prevent further decay and block any areas where bacteria may re-enter. The tooth-colored filling is then hardened and any excess material will be trimmed off, leaving behind a smooth service that blends in naturally. With dental fillings, the integrity of your tooth will be fully restored. In some cases, fillings can also be used to restore broken or cracked teeth.
What Are Fillings Made Out Of?
In dentistry, fillings can be made of many different materials including gold, composite resin, an amalgram, or porcelain. At AJS Dental, we are a mercury-free practice that offers porcelain and composite resin fillings. However, many patients have existing silver/mercury fillings that they have received in the past. There are many reasons why we do not recommend silver fillings, which include:
- They easily wear and break down, giving you a weaker tooth structure
- They can expand, contract, and split, exposing your teeth to more bacteria
- Silver fillings contain 50% mercury that can corrode and leak, causing stains on your teeth and gums
If you have silver fillings, we can safely remove and replace them with tooth-colored fillings that will give you long-lasting, beautiful results at AJS Dental.
