What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums and jawbone that surround teeth and keep them in place. This condition starts with inflamed gums (gingivitis) that eventually progress if left untreated. If the bacterial infection is prolonged, your gums may separate from your teeth, deteriorating any support for your teeth, which will result in tooth loss. Symptoms of periodontal disease include:

  • Bleeding, swollen, and red gums
  • Receding gums and jawline

However, in some cases, there may be no noticeable symptoms. That’s why it’s important to visit your dentist for regular exams and cleanings.

How is Gum Disease Treated?

At AJS Dental, our primary focus is to treat the bacterial infection first and stop it from spreading. In some cases, you may need a deep scaling in order to remove all of the bacteria, plaque, and tartar from your teeth and gums. You may also need a deep cleaning and antibiotic application to help treat the issue.

How Can You Avoid Gum Disease?

When it comes to avoiding gum disease, oral hygiene is very important. You must brush your teeth and floss daily to remove any plaque buildup. Other factors that may affect the health of your gums include:

  • Poor nutrition
  • Underlying health conditions such as diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Stress
  • Medications

If you are concerned about your gum health, schedule a visit with our office so we can help with your preventative treatment plan.
